The number of applicants has more than doubled since 2022, with the next academy class expected to be the largest in over two years. Friedman Benda (New York/Los Angeles) will be presenting a group exhibition that highlights LA-based design practices, while Moderne Gallery (Philadelphia) will showcase rare and important works by George Nakashima. The first decade of the plan pairs the new hospital with a research and academic building that is expected to open in 2028 on the western edge of the campus. And for one top San Francisco–based design firm, it meant reprising a role it played 35 years ago.

In her “Jewel Box Kitchen,” Kristen Peña of K Interiors engaged TBC Plaster Artisans to give her walls a sumptuous shine with a high-gloss Venetian plaster using Benjamin Moore’s Townsend Harbor Brown. In the grand foyer, Nancy Evars bathed the walls in a shiny shade of aubergine from Little Greene Paint. Just a few feet away, in the “Verdant” grand hallway, Lauren Berry matched a lacquered Arabesque console table from Randolph & Hein with her high-gloss blue-green walls.

Exhibitions always tackle interesting topics from unexpected angles, be it a Hanukkah-timed neon exhibit curated by a female-owned collective, or exhibitions spotlighting Jewish figures like The Muppets creator Frank Oz or Leonard Cohen. Naturally, there’s a deli on site serving pastrami sandwiches and matzo ball soup, if intellectual stimulation makes you hungry. Come for the impressive architecture (the museum recently added new, stunning spaces to its floor plan), stay for the impressive Asian art and artifact collections and exhibitions by renowned artists like Takashi Murakami. Some of the best exhibits at the beautiful museum, which is easy to get lost in, are thematic groupings dedicated to gender, power and religion.
