The number of applicants has more than doubled since 2022, with the next academy class expected to be the largest in over two years. Friedman Benda (New York/Los Angeles) will be presenting a group exhibition that highlights LA-based design practices, while Moderne Gallery (Philadelphia) will showcase rare and important works by George Nakashima. Influential galleries will be bringing their A-game to the launch of Design Miami LA, with most of them showcasing a range of new works from notable artists and makers.

The first decade of the plan pairs the new hospital with a research and academic building that is expected to open in 2028 on the western edge of the campus. A focus on bespoke lighting seemed to flip the switch on minimalist styling in a shift toward more opulence and abstract design. For her bathroom, Mill Valley–based designer Holly A. Kopman worked with artist Bobby Sarnoff and Dogfork Lamp Arts to develop a custom chandelier in homage to a Mazzega-designed lighting fixture she’d been obsessed with. “I thought this would be the perfect place for it,” she says of the water-jet-cut and baked-glass fixture made of interlocking C-shapes they’ve been prototyping for the last year. Twenty-eight intrepid interior and landscape design firms took up residence in the 11,155-square-foot home on “Billionaire’s Row” in Pacific Heights to transform the recognizable property into a showplace for modern living.

Williams estate and present works by Genesis Belanger, created in collaboration with Bower Studios. There are a total of 16 participating galleries including the likes of Southern Guild (Cape Town/Los Angeles), R & Company (New York), and Gallery FUMI (London). Celebrating the immense influence and contribution of Southern California to the design landscape, the debut will feature a series of exhibitions from leading galleries across the globe. “2024 is a year of evolution for Design Miami, as we continue to reach wider audiences through our expanding programming and ever-growing creative network.

While there are certainly more than what we covered on this list, we think these six have the best collections and exhibitions of all. In the grand hallway, Berry selected a sculptural light installation called “Sand & Sea–Cascading Waves” from London-based design studio Haberdashery. For the primary bedroom, Peruri selected a curvaceous Selene pendant lamp by Elsa Foulon to drop from the center of the space. And in the “Vaulted Jewel” bathroom off the main kitchen, Stephanie Marsh Fillbrandt of Marsh & Clark Design selected an antique patinated brass leaf chandelier to hang in contrast to the bright white subway tiles. Cultural significance aside, the real stars are the designers whose interior concepts not only reimagined every space in the stately home, but also help to predict the next big trends in design. And for one top San Francisco–based design firm, it meant reprising a role it played 35 years ago.

Aside from its distinctive architecture and ample space, this venue is a blank canvas that can easily be set up to suit the happy couple’s preferences. Couples can say “I do” surrounded by exposed-brick walls and warm lighting for a rustic-chic ambiance. Whether clients desire a vintage-inspired, elegant, or country-style wedding, the space can be transformed to their liking with their choice of decorations. It features a wide stage area that is perfect for ceremonies as well as live entertainment during the reception. With a state-of-the-art lighting system, retractable skylight, built-in bar, the design possibilities are endless. To address the rising need for specialty care, the hospital will increase UCSF Health’s current capacity by 37% to 682 beds, while adding 22 new operating rooms, for a total of 40 overall, and 31 new emergency care beds, increasing capacity by 71% to 70 beds.

In her “Jewel Box Kitchen,” Kristen Peña of K Interiors engaged TBC Plaster Artisans to give her walls a sumptuous shine with a high-gloss Venetian plaster using Benjamin Moore’s Townsend Harbor Brown. In the grand foyer, Nancy Evars bathed the walls in a shiny shade of aubergine from Little Greene Paint. Just a few feet away, in the “Verdant” grand hallway, Lauren Berry matched a lacquered Arabesque console table from Randolph & Hein with her high-gloss blue-green walls.

Exhibitions always tackle interesting topics from unexpected angles, be it a Hanukkah-timed neon exhibit curated by a female-owned collective, or exhibitions spotlighting Jewish figures like The Muppets creator Frank Oz or Leonard Cohen. Naturally, there’s a deli on site serving pastrami sandwiches and matzo ball soup, if intellectual stimulation makes you hungry. Come for the impressive architecture (the museum recently added new, stunning spaces to its floor plan), stay for the impressive Asian art and artifact collections and exhibitions by renowned artists like Takashi Murakami. Some of the best exhibits at the beautiful museum, which is easy to get lost in, are thematic groupings dedicated to gender, power and religion. For a relatively small city, San Francisco boasts a surprisingly high count of world-class art museums, catering to modernity lovers, antiquity enthusiasts and classic appreciators alike.

“It was only my second showcase ever, and it was at the very end of the wow-wow ’80s,” says AD100 designer Suzanne Tucker, cofounder of Tucker & Marks Design, who tackled the home’s dining room with an over-the-top formality in its original Showcase premier. History repeats itself with the return of the San Francisco Decorator Showcase, which debuts its 45th edition this month. Open to the public from April 27 through May 27, the ticketed event takes place within the historic 125-year-old Dutch colonial mansion was previously the event’s venue in 1989, and while interior design trends have changed, the high caliber of talent has not.

The Community Design Center's mission is to provide professional architectural, planning and community development services and assistance to low-income and minority communities in Califormia. It was founded on the principle that all communities should have equal access to the technical information and skills necessary to participate effectively in the planning and development of their community. Make an appointment to work with a design consultant below, or visit our showroom during one of our upcoming events. Even more than a beautiful space with world-class products, the showroom introduces a higher level of service for the design professional. Founders Peter West and Jeff Holt have developed a unique methodology that allows clients to work efficiently, unimpeded by routine follow-up phone calls or repeated requests for information. DEM, in partnership with the Mayor’s Office and Department of Human Resources, is working to streamline the application process for 911 Dispatchers and recruit more people to apply.

It feels perfectly fitting to start the year with our inaugural LA exhibition, which promises a dynamic and thoughtful gallery program that is deeply rooted in the city’s cultural and creative ecosystem,” says Jen Roberts, Design Miami’s CEO. Inspired by the city’s design heritage, the first Design Miami LA will run from May 16 to 20, and is one of the major announcements in this pivotal year, which marks the 20th anniversary since its first flagship fair launched in Miami. The holistic focus on the needs of patients reflects UCSF’s integrated research, education and care delivery mission at Parnassus Heights, helping advance discoveries rapidly from the laboratory to the patient’s bedside and fueling groundbreaking biomedical research and medical treatments. The hospital will incorporate the latest technologies in diagnostics, robotics and surgical procedures into complex specialty care, including neurosurgery, cardiology, transplant and emergency medicine. More than 200 national, civic, business and academic leaders gathered at Parnassus Heights April 27 in a standing-room-only event to break ground on UCSF Health’s new hospital of the future. Located downtown on a commercial-looking stretch, the MoAd is easy to miss, but that would be a mistake.

Harrison will also curate a Podium exhibition themed “Master Works of Collectible Design, 1938-Present” that will showcase a selection of old and new works sourced from various galleries. Located at Golden Gate Park, the de Young is its own little universe — architecturally curious, atmospheric, expansive and calming. The rotating exhibitions often offer star-studded moments (Kehindle Whiley! Ansel Adams!) and, if you’re lucky, some fashion extravaganza (currently on display, Fashioning Sam Francisco is a stunning exhibition full of couture gowns). The Legion of Honor, the second member of the Fine Art Museums of San Francisco family, has a distinct historic vibe and is often home to exhibitions of timeless icons like Botticelli and Tissot. Glossy surfaces weren’t solely relegated to ceilings, but extended to walls, custom cabinetry, and furnishings.

“A land of dreamers and creators, California has always been fertile ground for risk-taking and avant-garde thinking across all realms of design. Among its features will be innovative operating suites with access to MRIs, scanners and other imaging equipment, enabling surgical teams to provide more precise and personalized surgeries for the most complex cases, such as brain tumors and transplants. Patient rooms also are designed to accommodate the larger equipment needs of a modern hospital, reducing the disruption for patients and their families during their care.
